Log Heap 71, 72, 73,74, 75 from Virtual Quilter

Another mid week retreat has arrived … I am sure the weeks are getting shorter!

The first two designs are very different, but I like them both.

The middle changed in the one above. Makes a big difference to the overall

The one above looks like a block design as well as a quilt design.

Interesting design to finish this weeks mid week retreat, or coffee break.

More Log Cabin designs mid week, next week.

Not the prettiest colours but they serve the purpose of showing the designs clearly.

Any basic Log Cabin block instructions to make the blocks. I have used four strips on each side of the centre square which is cut the same width as the surrounding strips. If the strips are cut 1.5 inches wide the blocks will finish at 9 inches finished, 2 inch wide strips finish as a 12 inch block.

If you make a pile of Log Cabin blocks, play with them by laying them out on a bed or the floor or pin them to a ...

This Mid Week Retreat post is a bit late. I don’t often pre-program blog post by more than an hour or two, but I was going to be absent from home for a week, spending time with a group of quilters, and for that time, time meant nothing to us. In preparation I set up not just the five days of retreat but an extra few days to cover the rest of the month of May. Well, not quite the rest of the month. When I reached the last day of the month I did a post without any ...

I like it! Colours are not great, but the contrast is fine.

Reminds me of the things they put up and call wind farms.

My favourite for today is the one above.

Don’t know why I saved the design above, but perhaps it was because I thought I could spend some time playing with the corners to make the overall design more interesting.

If you enjoy quilting there is an opportunity to play in the big yellow space.

It is always fun to me to try to mix up something a bit different in old favourites. In the first Log Cabin design for this week there are 52 normal half light, half dark blocks, along with 8 all light and 4 all dark.

The second design has 40 normal half light, half dark, 20 all dark blocks, 4 all light.

Next there are 24 all light, 12 all dark, 28 half and half.

The fourth design has not quilt the same numbers as the second design … four more dark, no all light ones, 36 half and half.

I ...

Interesting, but not too sure about the corners.

I hope those who look at these designs can appreciate the designs, even though the colour choice is pretty uninteresting. I have often stopped to admire great designs at quilt exhibitions even when I pretty much hate the choice of colours.

In any quilt design we can change the colours to whatever we like. The important thing is to keep the contrast in the right places for the design to work in those different colours.

Another interesting one.

Love the third! I also like the next one.

I am going to play ...

Three blocks combined, all constructed exactly the same way, with all dark, all light and half light, half dark.

The colours I have used are not particularly attractive but I was concentrating on finding how many ways I could mix up those three blocks in overall designs.

I have found many times that if the contrast is right, I will admire quilts made with any combination of colours.

Even scraps can be sorted into light, medium and dark so that they make a nice design into a stunning quilt.

The advice I would give if sorting for Log Cabin blocks ...
